'GLORIOUS EXCESS'
by Mike Shinoda
Foreword by Shepard Fairey

Who would know more about the perils of celebrity than one who’s carrying its load? Linkin Park musician and visual artist Mike Shinoda turned his experience of success in the music industry into a grand visual comment. With the completion of the dual series that encompassed the idea, Glorious Excess (Born) and (Dies), Shinoda used paint, canvas and dirty, lo-res imagery to help his audience comprehend the influences of popular culture from his unique standpoint.

Glorious Excess is a 128-page full-color book that documents the bodies of work Shinoda created for (Born) and (Dies), two conjunct shows held at the Japanese American National Museum. Shinoda’s work follows a skeletal central figure’s rise to fame in the nine works created for Born, and the character’s fall in the 17 works produced for Dies. In the forward, world-renowned artist Shepard Fairey puts this work into cultural context. “Mike Shinoda makes art that is telling the culture what is happening to it,” Fairey writes, “but unlike the dry presentation of an academic social commentator, Mike’s visual commentary has a visceral appeal that might just break through to the ADD generation.”

The book also includes five insightful chapters written by Shinoda. In these chapters, he explains how the idea for Glorious Excess was born, critiques celebrity culture, discusses his hip-hop influences, questions media’s intentions, and examines what his work means after the King of Pop’s death. Shelley Leopold, managing editor of the LA Weekly, also wrote an essay for the book. With keen insight, Leopold thoroughly examines Shinoda’s work and sheds new light on it.

Glorious Excess is being published in conjunction with Glorious Excess (Dies) at the Japanese American National Museum, August 29 to October 4, 2009.

Proceeds go to Music For Relief and the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College Of Design, benefiting students based on financial need and artistic merit.'

Mike also posted a review on GLXS read it here:

LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4.

He also wanted to be part of the art show: "Congrats to Shinoda on opening GXS (dies)! I submitted this piece for the show, but it apparently "didn't work" :-( http://twitpic.com/fpjfg"
Poor Phi, I thought the drawing was very nice, courtesy of Ana B.

Interviews & Pictures

Mike just posted on his blog--new exclusive pictures thanks to TheHundreds.com

This Saturday night, Mike Shinoda unveils the final act of a 2-part art series entitled “Glorious Excess.” Glorious Excess : DIES will be showing at the JANM in downtown Los Angeles through October 4th, showcasing 17 new works “…about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. The show follows a nameless celebrity character as he indulges in the sex, drugs, and rock n roll lifestyle. In this show, he grows to the limits of his fame, reveling without moderation in the excesses of modern celebrity until he implodes.”

Phoenix on Twitter

Thursday, August 20, 2009

Phoenix is now on Twitter, he accepted a dare to stay on for 3 months, Mike doesn't think he'll last one. Let's see if he gets addicted to Twitter or if he loses the dare!
Follow Phi: http://twitter.com/phoenixlp

In case you don't already know, I'm not on Twitter. I simply feel this blog is big enough to hold all of my mental barf, I don't need another outlet. With that said, Chester was the only other guy in our band on...until now.

To make a long story short, Phoenix--who has been vehemently against joining--has accepted a dare: to try to stay on for 3 months. My bet is that he won't get to one...but whether he makes it that far or not, it will undoubtedly be hilarious watching him try. Do yourself a favor and follow him. I'll be checking in with him from here on mikeshinoda.com regularly.

My favorite tweet so far: "I already have 2 followers... I think they are junktweets... Maybe my persistent emailer will tweet me about enlarging my weiner."

http://twitter.com/phoenixlp

mike

edit: By the way, while you're there, tell the dumbass at http://twitter.com/m_shinoda that we know he's not me, and that he's an idiot for faking it. What a scumbag, LOL.

I really hope no one here or part of the MSC followed m_shinoda, lol. I wonder if Phoenix gets addicted...will he persuade Mike to get one? Ha. That'll be the day? It is addicting at first.

New Divide making billboard history

Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Billboard article.

'NEW' NO. 1: Same as the old one, and that lifts Linkin Park into elite territory in the history of the Alternative Songs chart.

"New Divide" leads the airplay list for a 10th week, making Linkin Park just the second act in the chart's 21-year archives to enjoy reigns of at least 10 weeks with three or more tracks. The band stayed on top for 12 weeks in 2003-04 with "Numb" and held sway for 15 frames with "What I've Done" in 2007.

Only Red Hot Chili Peppers have enjoyed more double-digit runs at No. 1, with four: "Scar Tissue" (16 weeks, 1999), "Otherside" (13 weeks, 2000), "By the Way" (14 weeks, 2002) and "Dani California" (14 weeks, 2006).

Of the 268 songs to lead Alternative Songs since the chart's Sept. 10, 1988, launch, "New Divide" is the 20th to command for at least 10 weeks. Foo Fighters' "The Pretender" logged the longest penthouse occupancy, leading for 18 weeks from Sept. 1 through Dec. 29, 2007.

CONGRATULATIONS NEW DIVIDE! :)

Shoot First

Mike Shinoda produced track: "Shoot First" featuring B-Real (of Cypress Hill) and Celph Titled.

Apathy’s upcoming sophomore solo project, Wanna Snuggle?

Wanna Snuggle

Connecticut’s world famous rhyme wrecker returns with a warm hug and a deadly snakebite on his sophomore full length album, “Wanna Snuggle?” Apathy, known as lead MC of the indie fan favorite Demigodz clique as well as a member of Jedi Mind Tricks’ Army of the Pharaohs crew, follows up 2006’s well-received Babygrande Records “Eastern Philosophy” debut with a brand new masterpiece of 21 songs. Painstaking lyricism, strangleholding mic presence, high caliber rap flows and upper echelon neck-snapping production round out this release in true Demigodzilla fashion. Some of the highlights include the uptempo “Shoot First”, which is a Mike Shinoda produced track featuring the legendary B-Real (of Cypress Hill) and Celph Titled, as well as a collaboration with J-Live called “This Is The Formula”. Little Brother’s own Phonte makes a cameo on “True Love”, and some soulful hooks are laced across the album courtesy of Chip-Fu (of Fu-Schnickens) and Wu-Tang vocalist Blue Raspberry. Also contributing a major factor to the album is singer Holly Brook, best known for Fort Minor’s chart topping “Where’d You Go” single and video. Fort Minor, Get Busy Committee, Demigodz and AOTP family are definitely in full effect throughout the project, including Ryu (of Styles of Beyond), Motive, Emilio Lopez, King Magnetic, Veze Skante and more. The bulk of production is handled by Apathy himself, who has been building up a production resume producing for Tiye Phoenix, Styles of Beyond, 7L & Esoteric, Eternia, and upcoming albums from Cypress Hill and Edo G.

"Inner View" with Mike Shinoda!

New interview in the interview section, here (We're still working on the interview section, bear with us).
I found this which includes the article above as well.Wave endorsers. Recently published didn't see if before, must of missed it, anyway...

Waves Audio, a leading provider of digital signal processing software and hardware solutions, announces that multiple GRAMMY® winners Linkin Park have been named as the latest high-profile endorsers of Waves plug-ins. The band’s innovative instrumentation, with its layers of heavy, processed guitars and DJ effects, provides the perfect backdrop for the intense vocal interplay between rapper Mike Shinoda and singer Chester Bennington. With passionate dedication to songcraft, the recording process and their live show, Linkin Park are consummate performers and a welcome addition to Waves’ ever-expanding roster of artist endorsers.

Since bursting onto the music scene with 2000’s Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park’s unique blend of modern rock, hip-hop and electronica quickly established them as one of the biggest acts of the early 21st century. Hybrid Theory went on to sell over ten million copies, making it one of the most successful debuts ever. The follow-ups Meteora (2003) and Minutes to Midnight (2007) both hit number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, cementing the band’s status as one of the decade’s premier artists. In addition to albums and singles, the band have been road warriors, spearheading the Projekt Revolution series of summer package tours and regularly selling out live venues around the world.

Linkin Park has a long history as Waves users. Says Shinoda, “When our band received our first big check, we spent it on gear ... which included recording software and Waves plug-ins.” Shinoda, who in addition to performing rap vocals also has produced the band and played several instruments, notes how important Waves is to their songwriting and recording process: “I use the basics a lot. Renaissance Compressor and EQ, DeEsser, L2, MondoMod and MetaFlanger are must-haves. Whether you have a final idea or just a sketch, you’re always trying to find the right sound [in the studio]. For me, having a comprehensive catalog of reliable, interesting plug-ins is a necessity. From EQ and compression to more unique effects, Waves plug-ins help us discover some great sounds.”

Waves is also very important to the band’s live performances. A key contributor to the band’s sound is FOH engineer Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, a Waves Live plug-in endorser who has made Waves an indelible part of the band’s signal chain. “I love the Waves stuff,” stated Van Druten. “Ever since I purchased the Live bundle last year, I use it religiously.”

Shinoda notes, “A couple years ago, we decided to start recording our live shows and releasing them to the fans. That meant that, firstly, the band had the pressure to play well every night and keep the shows interesting from week to week; and secondly, we needed some kind of safety net on the mix end to ensure that the sound quality of the shows was going to sound good once it ended up on someone’s iPod. Pooch and I set up a template of tracks with plug-ins, which helped. But the key to making them sound consistent was the plug-in chain on the master channel. We set up a chain that ended in Waves C4 Compressor and L2 Ultramaximizer that helped make all the mixes sound good.”

Remember to read the full interview. I found it pretty interesting! :)
