MTV interviewed LP yesterday at the Grammys. Phoenix takes most of the spotlight in the video, you get a bit of Shinoda at the end:

By now, you're probably aware that Linkin Park have a new album coming out this year, a challenging "concept record" that features plenty of "grandiose insanity."

But what you may not know is when that album is hitting stores. Well, we do — sort of. Because when MTV News caught up with the guys in Linkin Park on the red carpet of Sunday's Grammy Awards, co-frontman Mike Shinoda filled us in on the release date.

"Toward the end of the year, we're going to have a new record out," he said. "It's produced by myself and Rick Rubin."

So there you go — the new LP from LP will be out by the end of 2010, which is good news for the band's long-suffering fanbase. Of course, it should be noted that just last year Shinoda's pal Chester Bennington told MTV News that the still-untitled album could be out as early as June, so it would appear the release date is still very much in flux (an e-mail seeking comment from the band's label, Warner Bros. Records, was not returned by press time).

Of course, Linkin Park weren't just at the Grammys to spill secrets about their new album — they were also nominated for an award, as a live version of their hit "What I've Done" was up for Best Hard Rock Performance. And though they were honored by the nod, they'd be lying if they said it wasn't a bit surprising.

"This particular nom was a little unexpected for us. It was actually for a live track and when I heard there was a possibility of us being nominated, I thought initially it would be for 'New Divide,' because that was the most recent single," LP bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell said. "But they actually got this off of Road to Revolution, which is the live DVD we did a ways back. ... So when I got the e-mail and read it, I had to do a little double-take."

"Being nominated for a live track in the midst of all these studio tracks is a good feeling," Shinoda added. "It made me a little nervous, because you only get one take when you do a live recording. I don't think there's even that many live tracks nominated this year."

And while LP didn't win the Grammy (it went to AC/DC's "War Machine"), you get the feeling they weren't too bummed. After all, they've got big things on the horizon — toward the end of the horizon, that is.

Grammy-winning band Linkin Park is joining the ranks of celebrities on a mission to support relief efforts in Haiti; they've released a charity album thrown together with lightning speed. We spoke to Linkin Park member Mike Shinoda about Download to Donate, a compilation of unreleased songs from artists like Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette and the Dave Matthews Band. Shinoda tells PopEater exclusively, "I saw the images on the news, and I knew that Music for Relief had to do something. Our organization was started for the purpose of providing relief to people who had been hit by natural disaster. We started it after the tsunami in South Asia in 2005, and when we heard about the earthquake in Haiti, it was obvious to my band mates and me that we had a responsibility to do something."


Linkin Park - and their charity organization Music For Relief - channeled their energy into creating a widget with free, downloadable music. "We put it in yours hands to donate," Shinoda says. "You can donate a dollar, you can donate a thousand dollars, you can donate a hundred thousand dollars." Check out the widget below and the rest of our interview after the jump.

Linkin Park's own contribution to the project is a song called 'Not Alone,' a track they created from start to finish in less than two days. "I wish I could say we did the entire thing, from start to finished mix, in 24 hours. But that'd be fibbing," Shinoda says. "We actually had the bed of music and the melody in place. Once we picked the song, the lyrics came easily. It was a rough demo that was unfinished, and we finished it - the guys all said that it felt almost like fate that the song had never been finished. Once we decided that we were going to do this Donate to Download project and we needed to contribute a new song, Chester [Bennington] and I started working on lyrics. The lyrics just flowed out and they came really easily. We shot emails back and forth - 'hey, what do you think about this line? what do you think about that line?' - and within a day, we had the lyrics to the song."

Shinoda believes technology will help organizations like his accomplish things that the 'We Are the World's of yesterday couldn't achieve. "This project, I feel like it's a game-changing moment in terms of music charity, made possible by the technology of today," he explains. "Only a few years ago, you wouldn't have been able to get a song done as quickly as these songs can be done now. Only a few years ago, you wouldn't have been able to spread the word about a widget like this, because you wouldn't have had Facebook and Twitter - you wouldn't even have had widgets. The point is that right now, we're able to do this for the first time in history, and we really hope that we can get it right, and raise a lot of money and awareness for the people in Haiti who need it."

"We intend to do multiple releases of music; in fact a new song by Lupe Fiasco that I produced [just went up]. We're adding more songs as we go ... artists are hearing about it and they're calling our management company and saying 'Can I participate, can I donate a song?' And the answer is yes."

Shinoda is counting on Linkin Park fans to do the right thing with the free tunes. "You can go at any time and donate," he says. "If you feel like you've donated enough, then just download the songs. If you feel like you didn't donate anything and you listen to the songs and feel guilty - come back and donate!"

He adds, "The money's going to some great organizations. 100% of the money goes directly to the efforts in Haiti. We're working with the UN Foundation, Habitat For Humanity and Dave Matthews Band's Bama Works' Haitian Relief Effort. In broad strokes, the goal for Music For Relief is to provide immediate and long-term recovery, with focuses on clean water and shelter."

Linkin Park 'Challenge' Themselves On New Album
'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this,' Mike Shinoda says.

Forget all the talk of "concept records" and "grandiose insanity." On their new album, Linkin Park are going back to their roots in order to make the most challenging record of their career.

On Tuesday, MTV News spoke to LP co-frontman Mike Shinoda about his band's just-launched Download to Donate for Haiti project and, in the process, we managed to get some new information about the band's much-anticipated follow-up to 2007's Minutes to Midnight, which has been in the works for more than a year now. And while he still maintains that LP will be doing their fair share of growing on the new record, it's important to know that they're also not ignoring their past — quite the opposite, in fact.

"The album is going really well — we decided to go with Rick Rubin again, he's been in the studio with us. And we've been working in a different studio than we did the last record in, we decided to go back to the studio we did Hybrid Theory and Meteora in," Shinoda said. "It's been going great, I feel like it's an entirely different process and an entirely different style of music than anything we've done before. It's hard to place. People keep asking me, 'What does it sound like?' and it's hard to describe. When people hear it, they're going to have a tough time saying that it falls into a category."


And while talk like that might freak out some of the band's core audience, Shinoda cautions that it's just part of the natural growth of the band. After all, they've been doing this for more than 13 years now.

"I'll say this: I think on the last record there was a lot of personal growth that happened. We individually broke down a lot of boundaries — creatively and personally — with each other. We were friends making an album together — it wasn't painful and heart-wrenching the way some of the other records were," he said. "We had a really good time making Minutes to Midnight, and now I feel like we've grown from that point, where we've kind of knocked down the boundaries to a place where we're making an album that has a sound, that has a consistent thread running through it, and we're making something with this open-minded creativity that feels good."


But the still-untitled album (which Bennington told MTV News late last year could be out in June) isn't going to be some hazy, lazy conceptual thing, some by-product of a bunch of well-heeled musicians' studio wonkery — far from it. Even though they're one of the hugest rock bands on the planet, Linkin Park still feel like they've got something to prove, even if it's only to themselves.

"We make records as a challenge to ourselves," Shinoda smiled. "And the challenge this time is: 'Nobody else is making a record that sounds like this, only we can do it.' "

LOS ANGELES — Barely a week after tragedy hit Haiti in the form of a massive earthquake, Linkin Park have stepped forward to help the country's struggling residents with Download to Donate for Haiti, an ambitious project featuring new music from some of the industry's top musicians. On Tuesday (January 19), we caught up with Mike Shinoda, who is currently working overtime to turn his musical talents into much-needed relief.

"Download to Donate has come together very, very quickly," Shinoda explained of the project, featuring brand-new music that can now be downloaded in exchange for a donation to Haiti relief efforts. "It was an idea as of Thursday — and as of right now, we have nine songs up."

Shinoda plans to add more tracks in the upcoming days — each from a major act who donated their track in response to the January 12 earthquake. "We ask that you donate, but you don't have to — if all you can afford is to spread the word, embed the widget, share it on Facebook, Twitter, whatever, then that will be good enough," explained the rapper/songwriter/guitarist for Linkin Park, whose new track "Not Alone" is offered alongside contributions from Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette, Dave Matthews Band and more. "We're hoping to raise a lot of money for a lot of people who need it in Haiti.

"We had a demo [for 'Not Alone'] — the music was laid out, we had done the song a little while ago ... we just never used it because we never thought it was done," Shinoda remembered of the origins of their track. "[After the tragedy in Haiti], we listened to the demo again, essentially scrapped all the words, rewrote the words ... when you've got that idea and emotional charge in you and you put that in the lyrics, for me it does make better lyrics." Those lyrics include, "I break down/ Fear is sinking in/ The cold comes/ Racing through my skin/ Searching for a way to get to you/ Through the storm you go, giving up your home/ Go, leaving all you've known/ You are not alone."

"There's an authenticity and a passion that you can hear in Chester's voice on this track; we literally wrote [the new lyrics] via e-mail, before he had flown out from Arizona to L.A. [to record them]," Shinoda said.

Part of the remarkable speed behind their reaction to Haiti, Shinoda added, can be attributed to a philanthropic groundwork the band has had in place for a half-decade. "We started our organization, Music for Relief, back in 2005 after the tsunami in South Asia," he explained. "Music for Relief's goal is to provide relief, funds and awareness in the wake of natural disasters ... this is the first time that the technology has been available to do something like this; just a few years ago, it wouldn't be possible for artists to turn around songs so quickly, in a matter of days."

Shinoda hopes fans will keep their ears — and their hearts — open for more, as he plans to upload additional tracks in the days to come.

"By the way, I should say that Music for Relief [donates] 100 percent of the funds," he added. "We're just a conduit; everybody's working for free and everybody's working hard."

The Story of Linkin Park

Count minutes to midnight

What makes Linkin Park happy? Well, of course jamming at the studio. And if they can come up with an album at the same time, it’s just extra!

The listening session of Linkin Park’s new album Minutes to Midnight is closely controlled. The six misters have hired their own guards and the editors invited listen to the new album with head phones. The track list circulates under the code name ‘Lion Pride’. We are allowed to copy the names of the 12 tracks on our notebooks. The security measures taken in the bungalow of the Sunset Marquis hotel are strict as the musicians don’t want their art to leak on the internet beforehand.
– We have finally published our earlier material online. We were previously concerned to do so as on the internet people don’t necessarily listen to the album as a whole. For us the album is a piece of art and only one song doesn’t fully unfold it, the guitarist of the band, Brad Delson, tells.
– This may sound far-fetched, but can anyone make sense out of a part of ten seconds of a movie. In our opinion listening to one track of the album is as insipid as showing just a short part of a movie, the other vocalist of the band, Mike Shinoda, explains.

Over 150 songs

Mike and Brad are sitting on the terrace. A dry wind makes Brad’s curly hair even more messed up than it already is. Mike has hidden behind sunglasses. The interviews of the day have sucked all the energy out of the two men and Mike is yawning with devotion. Despite the exhaustion Brad is a talented storyteller and Mike who has also influenced the album as producer colors the stories up with his own insights. The atmosphere is relaxed and the musicians are content with their work.
– We have been at the studio for one and a half years and worked over ten hours a day. The making process of this album was more democratic than the one of our previous albums. Previously we voted the best songs out of 20 to go on the album but now each one of the guys participated in the writing process from the very beginning. Our DJ Joe Hahn noted that he felt that he was taking part in making this record more than the making process of the previous albums, Mike states.
– Each one of us brought songs with them. The best ones of them ended up on the computer, all in all more than 150 rough versions. We recorded some singing or humming in each one of them. Twelve best ones of them are on the album, Brad continues.
The guys have been living every musician’s dream, jamming at the studio with no hurry.
– We were able to use all the instruments we wanted. I believe that the album shows our love towards music. We didn’t do it because we had to do the next album but because we enjoy music, Brad describes.

Rendition of music

Hearing the album for the first time, it sounds fairly darkish. My opinion turns the two on the defensive. It doesn’t help even if I explain that this fits the Finnish mentality more than well.
– Okay, naturally the lyrics sound different in the ears of a Finnish person and a person living in Los Angeles, Brad finally laughs and continues:
– Everyone is allowed to comprehend our music the way they want. The same way as each one of us looks at a painting from they own point of view. That is the beauty of art.
– The lyrics of What I’ve Done can be easily understood as the end of the world or a rebirth. Or something totally different depending on the current state of mind, Mike admits.
Now he’s, above all, interested in what is the national drink of Finland.
– Oh, Finlandia vodka, is that what you drink?
They are interested in life in the North. But why don’t they come and have a show in Finland?
– Our agent Scott Thomas is booking all our shows. Maybe our fans in Finland haven’t been telling actively and loudly enough that they want us there. We want to perform in Finland so keep some noise about it in there, they add up.

How is Fort Minor doing?

Fort Minor was the name of the solo project under which Mike Shinoda published the album The Rising Tied in 2005.
– Before Linkin Park I made a lot of hip hop. Back then, about ten years ago, I had cheap equipment and I knew hardly anything about making music. During my time in Linkin Park I have learned a lot about producing, writing songs and overall a lot about people. Fort Minor was like the closing of the circle for me. The project started as I thought what it would be like to return to my roots and use all the knowledge I have gathered during the way to my music, Mike told to Suosikki magazine a couple of years ago.
Now he grins at the question.
– There’s nothing going on with Fort Minor. It was fun to do, but I didn’t have any greater plans with it. I was excited about it and brought that back with me to Linkin Park. It’s good to be making music with the other guys again.

This is how Linkin Park started

Friends, vocalist-rapper Mike Shinoda and guitarist Brad Delson, recorded their first songs in Mike’s bedroom in 1996.They met the drummer Rob Bourdon in primary school and Mike met the DJ Joe Hahn in Art School. Brad shared an apartment with Dave “Phoenix” Farrell who became the bassist of the band. Phoenix left the band after college but came back a year later. Band’s another vocalist Chester Bennington who was chosen to replace Mark Wakefield came from Arizona to California after Mike heard him sing on the phone. Chester left his regular job and his wife to Arizona to wait for the success of his music career.

Once upon the time at the studio

During one and a half years many things happened at the studio. Reminiscing Brad’s stumble stirs up the biggest burst of laughter:
– I ran into a glass door. It was the first day at the studio and the door was so clean that I thought it was open. After that I put there a warning sign saying: Be wise, don’t walk through! We videotaped the recording process and we’re publishing material from the time of Meteora to today on our website, Brad reveals.
There are juicy stories also from working with legendary producer Rick Rubin who has also worked with for example U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and System of a Down.
– Rick wasn’t engaged to the making process of the record the same way as we were. Every now and then he came to listen to the songs and influenced on the results. For example for the song Little Things Give You Away our drummer Rob recorded demonic drums with medium equipment at his practice studio so that the rest of us could get an idea of the song. Eight months later Rob had practiced playing the song for at least 50 hours. We recorded it with the best possible recording equipment. Rick listened to it and concluded that the demo version was better. He was right. The first version still had the original feeling. There was something magical about it. During the way the song had turned to sound mechanic even though Rob played it perfectly, Mike tells.

Linkin Park and Grammy Foundation Team up for 'Grammy SoundChecks' Program

On September 30, multi-platinum rock band LINKIN PARK hosted a Grammy SoundChecks event for Grammy University Network students, a Grammy Foundation program that prepares students for careers in the music industry. Vocalist Mike Shinoda and guitarist Brad Delson invited a handful of Southern California college students into the recording studio for a question-and-answer session and demonstration of the band's writing/recording process. Using smash hit single "New Divide", which spent an incredible 14 weeks atop the Billboard Modern Rock Radio Chart, as an example, the band offered the students insight into the way LINKIN PARK crafts its songs.

"Meeting the group made me wish I had been a part of a program like Grammy U when I was in college," says Shinoda. "Brad and I talked about it afterward and were impressed by the kids and their curiosity about the process and the direction of the industry. These are students who are immersed in a fresh new world of music, both artistically and professionally. They had a great sense of energy."

One of the most successful rock bands to emerge this decade, LINKIN PARK (vocalists Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda, drummer Rob Bourdon, guitarist Brad Delson, DJ Joe Hahn and bassist Dave "Phoenix" Farrell) has amassed more than 45 million worldwide sales, a remarkable string of chart-topping hit singles, a pair of Grammy wins, and an international fanbase whose members number in the millions.

"New Divide", which LINKIN PARK specifically wrote and recorded for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", made radio history, becoming the third song ever to debut simultaneously in the top 10 of Billboard's Hot 100 and Alternative Charts (the other two were COLDPLAY's "Speed of Sound" and LINKIN PARK's own "What I've Done"). Although this site is dedicated to Mike Shinoda, I found an interview with Chester talking about the new Linkin Park album as well as his new side project, Dead by Sunrise.
I thought this part was interesting:

Linkin Park’s next record isn’t slated for release until 2010, but can you give us some idea of what we’ll be hearing? I read a quote from Mike Shinoda stating that the album will be “genre-busting.”

Chester Bennington: Mike, with that comment, every interview I’ve done they’ve asked me specifically about that quote! Thanks, Mike! From my perspective, I agree with him. The longer Linkin Park is around, the more difficult it is to find a place that we fit in best. Are we a pop band? Are we an alternative rock group? Are we a modern rock act? Are we a metal group? Or are we something else? Nobody knows what the hell is going on with us anymore, and I think that’s something that will propel us into being a better band in the future. I think it sets us apart.

I do believe this record is definitely going to help make that more difficult for people to understand. In terms of how it sounds, we’ve got 40 songs. A handful of them are amazing. A dozen or so are really good, and the rest could have potential. The ones that are pretty amazing and the ones that everyone is pretty much like, “As long as the lyrics are great, the song is a masterpiece” – they are really fucking good. It’s kind of nuts. From my perspective when I hear them, I can’t believe that I’m in this band. I can’t believe this is the stuff that I’m a part of making. I’m sharing the same stage as some of the most talented people in the world and have one of the best producers in the history of music. We’re making groundbreaking stuff, and it’s very strange to be part of that.

Mike’s quote was certainly an intriguing one that piqued our curiosity.

Chester Bennington: That quote is so not Mike’s personality. He’s a really pretty humble guy, and he doesn’t like to toot his own horn. For him to come out and say – “ Yeah, it’s genre-busting” – it’s kind of like, “Well, all right!”

Hidden Champion is a Japanese magazine and their recent issue (#14) came out yesterday, which includes Mike Shinoda! Unfortunately there is no better scan of the page Mike is on, if you click on the picture you can get a slightly better picture, but it's not large enough. Plus it's in Japanese, which I do not know. If any of our readers are in Japan or have access to the Hidden Champion magazine, please provide us with a better scan! Contact us and if you wouldn't mind translating it for us. :)

HIDDEN CHAMPION is a free japanese Magazine featuring "hidden champions" of many cultures. The first issue appeared in August 2003. Since then it comes out 2 times a year and it´s available in good clubs, record shops, cafes and bars.

Mike will be on The Daily Habit this Thursday on FUEL TV at 2:00PM EST (1:00PM CST, 11:00AM PST *times may vary*) and 5:00PM EST (4:00PM CST, 2:00PM PST *times may vary*). Comcast customers have to pay for this channel, unfortunately I have Comcast, and I don't have access to this channel! However, The Daily Habit is only 30 minutes so I'm not sure how long Mike will be on. To check what channel or when it'll be on where you live please visit FUEL.TV. To check what channel go to FUEL.TV and on the top next to the FUEL TV logo you'll see "Channel Finder" enter your zip code and Cable provider. I suggest you check your TV guide to confirm what time it'll be on!

Mike just posted on his blog--new exclusive pictures thanks to TheHundreds.com

This Saturday night, Mike Shinoda unveils the final act of a 2-part art series entitled “Glorious Excess.” Glorious Excess : DIES will be showing at the JANM in downtown Los Angeles through October 4th, showcasing 17 new works “…about obsession with celebrity culture, consumer addiction, and fascination with excess. The show follows a nameless celebrity character as he indulges in the sex, drugs, and rock n roll lifestyle. In this show, he grows to the limits of his fame, reveling without moderation in the excesses of modern celebrity until he implodes.”

"..and here's some more new info: the skate decks representing four of the pieces in the show will be available. "The Good Life," "Oyakodon," "Fireworks," and "Neuphoria" are the names of the pieces." Yep!

GLXS DIES is almost here! As mentioned before http://www.mikeshinoda.com/notes/notes/info_on_glorious_excess_dies>), I will have a few new pieces of merchandise available at the Glorious Excess show. Some of you are saying, "Wow Mike, I wish I was in Los Angeles for the opening, I'm stuck all the way out here in ______, and I wish I could get one of those books or skate decks."

Well, I'm happy to say that you can. All merchandise (that doesn't sell out on opening night) will be available here on mikeshinoda.com starting Monday, in the web store. So come back on Monday, click on "store" to get the new stuff, and support two great charities.

Renaissance Compressor and EQ, DeEsser, L2, MondoMod and MetaFlanger are must-haves. Whether you have a final idea or just a sketch, you’re always trying to find the right sound [in the studio]. For me, having a comprehensive catalog of reliable, interesting plug-ins is a necessity. From EQ and compression to more unique effects, Waves plug-ins help us discover some great sounds.”

Waves is also very important to the band’s live performances. A key contributor to the band’s sound is FOH engineer Ken “Pooch” Van Druten, a Waves Live plug-in endorser who has made Waves an indelible part of the band’s signal chain. “I love the Waves stuff,” stated Van Druten. “Ever since I purchased the Live bundle last year, I use it religiously.”

Shinoda notes, “A couple years ago, we decided to start recording our live shows and releasing them to the fans. That meant that, firstly, the band had the pressure to play well every night and keep the shows interesting from week to week; and secondly, we needed some kind of safety net on the mix end to ensure that the sound quality of the shows was going to sound good once it ended up on someone’s iPod. Pooch and I set up a template of tracks with plug-ins, which helped. But the key to making them sound consistent was the plug-in chain on the master channel. We set up a chain that ended in Waves C4 Compressor and L2 Ultramaximizer that helped make all the mixes sound good.”
