MIKE SHINODA REMIXES METRIC

Mike Shinoda has remixed Metric’s track “Gold Guns Girls.” The song is off Metric’s new album, Fantasies, and fans can listen to the Linkin Park man’s version of it at MikeShinoda.com. Word has it that Linkin Park may work on a remix of a Kings of Leon track from their Only By the Night album. We’ll keep you posted.

Kings of Leon have revealed plans to release a remix album later this year.

Drummer Nathan Followill told Billboard.com that the forthcoming album will feature remixes by Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, and Linkin Park, among others.

“It’s amazing to hear your song played by these people who are so creative. Most of the time it takes me two or three listens to even wrap my head around, ‘Oh man, that’s our song…’”, said Followill.


The drummer also revealed that the band will release a Live DVD sometime this year.

The Live DVD was filmed at the band’s concert at London’s O2 Arena in July.

“We just put the cameras in the back of our minds and acted like they weren’t even there,” Followill told Billboard.

No exact release dates have been given for the remix album or the DVD.

Mike Shinoda is widely known through his work with the band Linkin Park, although I’m more of a fan of his hip-hop/rap project Fort Minor and his album, The Rising Tied.

He also has a degree in illustration, and is a graduate from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. This past Sunday August 30th, Joz and I had the honor to go see Mike Shinoda at the Japanese American National Museum in LA’s Little Tokyo, where he presented artwork from his previous show Glorious Excess (Born) in 2008. (His other art exhibit, Diamond, Spades, Hearts and Clubs, was presented at Gallery 1988.)

I was totally hyped and anxious — not only go to see Mike Shinoda, but to also see what was in store regarding his art. The day started off with a JANM Members Only event — a conversation between him and Roger Gastman of Swindle Magazine. During this event, Mike touched on various topics from his influences and background in art to the character and story of Glorious Excess (Born and Dies). After his discussion, Mike took questions from the audience, where he gave some really personal and in-depth answers; he mentioned how people labeling his music drives him crazy — like “rock/rap,” which was funny because I later mentioned to him that was the type of music I liked.

After Mike took questions from the audience, we got to see a short video segment that is being played at the JANM exhibit (part of that segment is also in the video above). Then Mike took pictures, autographed catalogs and other items for those in attendance, while being extremely cool the whole time! On top of that, Mike graciously walked us through the entire exhibit at JANM and further discussed certain topics in regards to his art. One particular subject that he brought up was the idea of a sellout; he defined a sellout as being someone who loses their creative integrity, which correlates with the character in Glorious Excess. Overall, for me this was a once in a lifetime experience and this is something I will remember and share for the rest of my life. I thought Mike’s art exhibit was very interesting and I understood a lot more after reading more about it in his catalog. As for Mike Shinoda the person, I thought he was very cool and down-to-earth, as well as being very humble and considerate.

'GLORIOUS EXCESS'

Who would know more about the perils of celebrity than one who’s carrying its load? Linkin Park musician and visual artist Mike Shinoda turned his experience of success in the music industry into a grand visual comment. With the completion of the dual series that encompassed the idea, Glorious Excess (Born) and (Dies), Shinoda used paint, canvas and dirty, lo-res imagery to help his audience comprehend the influences of popular culture from his unique standpoint.

Glorious Excess is a 128-page full-color book that documents the bodies of work Shinoda created for (Born) and (Dies), two conjunct shows held at the Japanese American National Museum. Shinoda’s work follows a skeletal central figure’s rise to fame in the nine works created for Born, and the character’s fall in the 17 works produced for Dies. In the forward, world-renowned artist Shepard Fairey puts this work into cultural context. “Mike Shinoda makes art that is telling the culture what is happening to it,” Fairey writes, “but unlike the dry presentation of an academic social commentator, Mike’s visual commentary has a visceral appeal that might just break through to the ADD generation.”

The book also includes five insightful chapters written by Shinoda. In these chapters, he explains how the idea for Glorious Excess was born, critiques celebrity culture, discusses his hip-hop influences, questions media’s intentions, and examines what his work means after the King of Pop’s death. Shelley Leopold, managing editor of the LA Weekly, also wrote an essay for the book. With keen insight, Leopold thoroughly examines Shinoda’s work and sheds new light on it.

Glorious Excess is being published in conjunction with Glorious Excess (Dies) at the Japanese American National Museum, August 29 to October 4, 2009.

Proceeds go to Music For Relief and the Michael K. Shinoda Endowed Scholarship at Art Center College Of Design, benefiting students based on financial need and artistic merit.'

LA’s Japanese American National Museum is now hosting a prodigious art exhibition by Mike Shinoda entitled Glorious Excess (Dies). The massive creative effort is a pivotal point in the career of the young artist, as he establishes himself outside of his work in music. Shinoda’s adroit use of all types of media to channel his voice is remarkable. The show signals the artist’s ability to create his vision in a plethora of mediums, including digital platforms. It’s clear that the concept of the exhibition has been thoughtfully embedded into each rendition. It’s not too early to opine that Glorious Excess (Dies) provides one the year’s most memorable moments. On view until October 4.
